Get It Right....The First Time
By Sharon Bigelow RN MSN ANP-BC AOCNP | 20-Oct-09 | 3:06 PM

Newsweek will publish an article titled, “What You Don’t Know Might Kill You” by Sharon Begley and Jeneen Interlandi in their October 26, 2009 edition.  It is a report examining the disparity of cancer care in the country today and a frightening reality of what we already know as cancer professionals - knowledge is power and it has a direct correlation to better patient outcomes.

This article underscores the need for cancer patients to be their own advocates because at the end of the day, it is up the patient to make the best decisions for their treatment and care. That means knowing how to ask the right questions, getting the right diagnosis, connecting to the right resources and doing it in a way that aligns with a personal philosophy – all while dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Unfortunately, no one is going to look out for these patients but themselves! Most Americans did not study medicine or “Cancer 101” in school. So how are they going to be their best advocate?  The NavigateCancer Foundation exists for this exact reason.  It was founded as a direct response to meet the growing need that cancer patients have to learn how to help them find the best quality cancer care in America today.
