Improve Chances By Easing Side Effects
By Sharon Bigelow RN MSN ANP-BC AOCNP | 19-Sep-08 | 3:56 PM

Many cancer patients drop their doses, shorten their treatments or never complete their prescribed course because of difficult side effects caused by chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments. This common problem can impact the outcome.  Because of this, we need to be just as aggressive in treating side effects as we are in treating the cancer itself!

Cancer patients are well versed in certain aspects of side effect management but less so about products that can ease their discomfort, improve their treatment experience and improve their chance of completing their therapy.

Besides wigs and scarves, patients must be referred to products that may help them get through some of the uncomfortable times. Have you been told about products for dry mouth that are essential to optimize comfort, nutrition and dental health? Were you aware that ginger drops may help ease nausea further after nausea mediation has been taken? Did you know that there is a deodorant safe to use during radiation? How about a shampoo that is gentle and soothing to use when some, but not all, hair loss may happen?   And what about a spray that you can carry in your purse to halt a hot flash while suffering at work? Lotions are recommended for all chemotherapy patients but were you aware of the natural products?

We recommend a website that carries these products and more. Visit www.maddoxoncology.com and get familiar with some of the products that are available to help you. This company was founded by a cancer survivor who has walked in your shoes!  She has gathered high quality, credible, natural, and guaranteed products that really do make a difference in the every day lives of patients. She has worked tirelessly for cancer patient’s rights and better care for each of you.

A final thought… People are always looking for ways to help cancer patients. Instead of bringing over a casserole, try these ideas. Send them a gift package of products they will find helpful or a book they may find inspirational. Buy them a prayer quilt to wrap themselves in during their treatments or give them one of the best cookbooks available for cancer patients today, Betty Crocker Living with Cancer Cookbook®. We think cancer patients will really appreciate it!

Cancer patients can improve their chances of sticking to treatment that is on time and at full dose when they decrease their side effects. And products can help.
